The Glory is about my youngest brother, Ben Brown, who passed away at age 42. I realized at some point that perhaps we put too much emphasis on the length of a person’s life. The density of memories, the weight of relationship, and the deep impression someone’s time here makes is equally valuable.
I recorded the piano and lead vocal at Jeremy Goody’s Megasonic Sound in Oakland, CA. I sang the back-ups at Ben Leinbach’s Old Bull Studios in San Anselmo, CA. Ben edited, mixed and mastered the track.

I found a photograph taken in your Navy days
Your gaze is enigmatic, the shading is dramatic
The hollow in your cheekbone
And the challenge in your stare

This photo shows your hapless side, misfortune written in the lines
But then I see the kid I knew, and your humor shining through

I remember when you stayed with me, we watched my roommate’s pay TV
We watched “My Name Is Nobody”, a satire cowboy comedy
And something about a plate of beans had us gasping for our breath
Yes, we laughed so hard it made us cry
When the hero slapped that rat-faced guy
I can still replay that scene
You and me and a TV screen
And the stark raving beauty of the moment

Oh and the glory, the glory of your life
Your story could cut me like a knife
